Survey of Jiangxi Science & Technology Normal University

    Jiangxi Science & Technology Normal University, situated in the heroic Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, is one of the first vocational and technological normal universities established in China and the only four-year college of vocational normal education in Jiangxi Province. It mainly cultivates teachers of vocational and technological education and practical specialized telants. The university has become an education-oriented university based mainly on science, literature, and education in the past 30 years of construction and development and it is marching into the advanced rank of its kind in the country.

History:

    The university, once named Nanchang Branch of Jiangxi Teachers' College, was founded in 1977. In 1984, it was renamed as Nanchang Teachers' Training School and Nanchang Vocational and Technical Normal College was under construction. In 1987, it was upgraded as an undergraduate college and was renamed as Nanchang Vocational and Technological Teachers' College. In 2002, it was renamed as Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University.

Disciplines & Programs:

    Entitled to confer master degrees, the university has 6 postgraduate programs. There are 7 provincial key disciplines, 16 secondary teaching schools, 46 undergraduate programs, among which 11 are famous-brand. 3 provincial key labs, a provincial key research base of human social science, a provincial experimental teaching pilot center, a provincial engineering technology research center, and a Nanchang municipal research pilot base have been established in the university. The pattern based on vocational education and facing the tertiary industry has been formed.

Teaching Staff:

    There are 689 full-time teachers, including 110 professors and 146 associate professors. 355 of them have been conferred doctor degrees and master degrees and 42 of them are tutors of master's degree graduates. 10 of them enjoy the special subsidies financed by the State Council, Jiangxi Provincial Government and Nanchang Municipal Government. 1 of them is to be cultivated as “a young scientist (Jinggang Star) of Jiangxi Province. 3 of them are among the “New Century's Talent Project of One Hundred, One Thousand, and Ten Thousand” of Jiangxi Province.” 2 of them have won the honor of “young scientist of Jiangxi.” 37 of them are Jiangxi provincial college middle-aged and young disciplinary leaders and backbone teachers. 2 of them are “college teaching masters of Jiangxi Province.”

Education Conditions:

    The university, boasting two campuses: the Fenglin Campus and the Hongjiaozhou Campus, covers an area of 145.53 hectares with a building area of 483,000 square meters, a total value of 65.53 million yuan of teaching research equipment and instruments, and a library of 978,000 books. What's more, there are 31 labs/centers and 125 social practice bases in and outside the campuses. The computer internet covers the whole college, having realized target that teaching, research, library document retrieval and office management are all through network.

Talent Cultivation:

    Since its founding, it has cultivated over 30000 full-time undergraduates and three-year college students, having made great contributions to Jiangxi's vocational education and basic education development. Now, there are 11,214 full-time undergraduates in the university. In the past three years, its employment rate has been above the average of the colleges in Jiangxi Province. Since 2004, its students have won 580 provincial and national awards in the World Aerobics Dancing Championships, the National College Students Sports Games, the National College Students Mathematics Modeling Compitition, English Contests, electronical design contests, advertisement art design contests and other scientific and cultural activities. The university's aerobics dancing team won the first world gold medal of its kind for the country.

Scientific Research

    Since 2004, its teachers have chaired 761 various research projects, among which 9 are the projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 the projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China, and 3 the projects of the National Education Science Planning of China. 377 are provincial research projects of different kinds. Besides, they have published 177 academic books and textbooks, and 1703 essays, 415 of which have been collected in SCT, EI, and ISTP. 52 of the research achievements have won provincial and above provincial awards. In addition, it has three academic journals: “Vocational Education Forum”, “Journal of Jiangxi Teachers' College of Science and Technology”, and “Foreign Vocational Education.” “Vocational Forum” was once listed among the core journals and ranked the 11 th of the education journals reprinted by the copying material retrieval of the People's University.

Vocational Education Base

    It was defined as a national key construction vocational teachers' training base, a local key construction pilot vocational college, and a national training center of calisthenics for teen-agers by the State Education Ministry, Finance Ministry, and the State Physical Culture and Sports Administration successively. Besides, it was defined as an urban teachers' training center, a vocational dress skill appraisal center, and a vocational hotel English training and testing center of Jiangxi Province by Jiangxi Province.

Foreign Communication

    The university has attached great importance to foreign communication and cooperation and it has won the qualification to enroll international students. So far, it has established good cooperation relations with some colleges in the United States, Japan, Russian, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and other countries and has held many Sino-American and Sino-Japan summer cultural communication month activities. In addition, it has organized many vocational education visiting delegations to Germany, France, some African countries and regions and has held business cooperation talks with some foreign businesses.

Public Recognition

    The university's unique school-running characteristics: “based on vocational education and facing the tertiary industry” has been accepted and recognized by the higher level of administration and the society. It was singled out as a vocational education normal college by the State Ministry of Education and chosen to represent Jiangxi's normal colleges to exchange school-running experience at the national normal education conference. On the occasion of the 20 th anniversary of its founding, Comrade Li Lanqing, an ex-deputy premier of the State Council and an ex-standing committee member of the CPC Political Bureau wrote for the university: “Cultivating high quality vocational education teachers and making contributions to the promotion of the vocational education in China.” The university has won honors of “National Advanced University in Social Practice Activity”, “Provincial Advanced University in Vocational Education”, “Provincial Advanced University in Employment”, and “ Provincial Civilized University”. The People's Daily and many other mass media have reported its outstanding achievements in serving the local economic construction, promoting the university's development, and cultivating qualified talents. The Jiangxi Daily has written 9 special reports in series about its school-running achievements and characteristics.
